Hello again. Welcome to SEG center. In today’s blog we will speak on medical conditions that often arise in conjunction with ASD. As if the symptoms that come along with ASD are not enough, but the unfortunate reality is that other medical conditions accompany ASD.
Conditions such as the following:
Gastrointestinal (GI) problems
- Chronic constipation
- Abdominal pain
- Reflux
- Vomiting
- Chronic diarrhea
Epilepsy
Migraines
Feeding issues
- Extremely restricted food habits
- Food allergies
- Overeating
- Pica (eating non-food items)
Sleep disorders
- Difficulty sleeping
- Waking up repeatedly
Attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Schizophrenia
- Bipolar disorder
- Asthma
- Eczema and other skin conditions
Questions to consider and what to do now?
Does my kiddo have any other conditions? Many of the conditions outlined above overlap each other. What makes this even more difficult for us as parents as well as for researchers is to clearly determine how and why children with ASD can experience more than one disorder. So what can we as parents do? Document document document. Let me be clear, you don’t want to be an overly paranoid, obsessive Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy parent, however you have to be thorough when documenting your child’s symptoms. The information you present to your pediatrician can help him/her direct you to services that could reduce or better yet eliminate these issues. For Jayson, while growing up, he battled with eczema from birth until today. His PCP prescribed everything she could think of and I eventually gave up. The only thing that has worked for Jayson and still works until today and you can see the HUGE difference is a cream my sister-in-law makes from scratch called mem’s cream. Her website is below and you must must try it. Our whole family uses it for dry, flaky skin and I don’t even have to say anything else, but look at the difference in Jayson’s face. https://www.memsbodycream.
